Flexible components for evolving narratives

In 2022, at 10up, we began the revamp of The Nobel Prize website with a clear challenge: to create a flexible, component-based design system that could scale across the brand’s digital ecosystem, including future initiatives like the Nobel Museum (2024).

Working closely with Nobel’s content team and 10up’s engineers, we built a system that made content management intuitive and implementation efficient, supporting multiple websites with distinct needs while maintaining a cohesive, scalable design language for a brand synonymous with prestige, legacy, and cultural impact.

A user experience built for a scalable storytelling

Designed for flexibility, the system gave editorial teams the tools to create dynamic, engaging stories through reusable components that adapted to different content types and audience needs. Whether crafting homepages, archive pages, or event listings, teams could easily assemble narrative-rich layouts without compromising consistency or visual quality.

For users, the experience became more intuitive and immersive, horizontal scrolls showcased everything from laureate profiles to exhibitions, while smart filters and modular navigation made it easy to explore by topic. Behind the scenes, the system streamlined workflows, reduced maintenance overhead, and gave content teams the freedom to scale storytelling with speed and confidence.

Design ops at work: Building systematic, scalable design

To support long-term scalability, we created a unified design library powered by a robust token system, defining foundational elements like typography, spacing, and color, including flexible brand pairings. This system became the backbone for a versatile component library used across multiple websites, while also supporting custom elements like site-specific headers and footers.

By aligning design and engineering through a shared product roadmap, we streamlined the rollout of new features and interaction patterns. The result: a more cohesive, accessible, and visually polished user experience, built to evolve and scale with the brand’s growing digital presence.
