Evolution of a print icon
At 10up, I helped redesign monocle.com, the digital home of the iconic print publication celebrated for its minimalist aesthetic and sharp editorial voice. The challenge: craft a modern, intuitive experience that honors the brand’s timeless identity.
Partnering closely with Monocle’s editorial and digital teams, I led a collaborative design process to evolve their signature style into a future-ready platform. The result: a seamless ecosystem that brings together in-depth journalism, elegant storytelling, an expanded podcast hub, rich video content, and e-commerce refined and reimagined for the digital age.
Rethinking the user journey
One of the key challenges was designing a navigation that gives users access to the nearly 22 topics Monocle is known and loved for, without overwhelming them. We reimagined how the brand’s five core themes: Affairs, Business, Culture, Design, and Travel. Could serve as dynamic entry points rather than rigid silos. Instead of imposing a traditional hierarchy, we built a structure where topics intersect organically, empowering users to explore the filters.
The result: a more intuitive, flexible experience that lets users dive into what they love, whether it’s an article, a video, or a radio show, on their terms, in their moment.
Print elegance, digitized
It was all about translating the quiet discipline of Monocle’s print language into a digital form, where grid, space, and type aren’t just design elements, but guiding principles.
From long reads to live radio, moving image to commerce, it’s all part of a connected system that feels less like a website and more like a natural extension of the print version. A brand experience where editorial can live, shift, and resonate, without ever losing its form, no matter the format.
Scalable design system for Monocle’s digital future
As part of the redesign, we created a flexible design system that translates Monocle’s editorial elegance into a digital language, modular, consistent, and unmistakably Monocle.
Built in close collaboration with 10up’s engineers and Monocle’s in-house team, the system is more than a toolkit; it’s a living library of reusable, documented components designed to grow. A foundation that ensures every future digital product feels considered, coherent, and true to the brand’s quiet confidence, from web to mobile and beyond.
